BY5-F14.9.23. contd. - 5 - abandoned the use of the so called security bolt was because the bolt itself, even when made to correct dimensions, was a very prolific cause of slow deflation, and they state their records shew that since the use of this fitting has been discontinued their complaints have decreased enormously. We would recommend to S. Dept. that when trouble occurs like that in the four instances under discussion, the right thing to do is to have the tube and cover inspected, as invariably a mark will be found in the cover and a small hole would be found to exist in the tube apart from the large burst and sufficient evidence would thus be accumulated to convince the owner that the trouble was not absence of security bolts, but absence of tyre pressure, which in most cases would have been avoided if a reliable tyre pressure gauge was used to check pressures on the tyres every morning. In this connection we are asking the Dunlop Company to supply you with some sample pressure gauges of the type referred to, so that Sales can themselves check their tyres by use of same and satisfy themselves as to the reliability of the gauge. There can be no question but that in most cases an owner judges the condition of his tyres by their appearance, which with a cord tyre is a very unsafe practice, the only safe thing being to test by a reliable gauge.
