To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Std. J3317 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Std.10/KW. 28.1.35. Hot Spot Heat Control Valve - Buick. In reply to your memo. E/McS.1/HP.21.12.34, we are sending you on attached sheet the specifications of the materials of which the various parts of this valve are made. Hl. has analysed a set of parts obtained by us and his figures agree closely with these specifications. However, he says that he is not aware that the steel of which the spindle is constructed is made in this country, and he suggests that KE.965 would be as good if not superior for the purpose. The clearance allowed between spindle and bush is .006" on diameter. As far as the Buick which we have is concerned, there are no audible rattles or gas leaks with this valve, while General Motors say that they have experienced no trouble in this respect. They stress, however, the importance of the spring stop (for the "heat on" position of the valve) which they use, as this is the only stop which they have found to be noiseless in operation.
