Controllable Shock Dampers - Ph.II.

The shock damper Governor Units on the following chassis have needed attention at Cricklewood in the way of dismantling, cleaning and reassembling.

In all these cases dirt under the valves has prevented the correct pressure being obtained in the system.

From our experience on 6 Experimental cars we are quite satisfied that once the governor unit is clean no trouble is experienced. We have had cases where dirt has caused failures on newly built units.

In order to ensure cleanliness of the unit we had arranged with E.J.J. that the governor unit test rig should have a circulating oil system through a fine filter. This should thoroughly clean the various passages in the unit. However, no such rig is yet in existence.

Under the circumstances it appears that we cannot rely on these units being perfectly clean on production and are therefore going to test a filter in the governor unit which will filter the oil as it circulates through the valves.

In the meantime a greater effort will have to be made in cleaning the governor units. We suggest that the filtered oil circulation system from E.J.J. governor unit test rig should be added to the present temporary rig.
