SPECIALISTS IN PATTERNS FOR AIR-COOLED & WATER-COOLED CYLINDERS & CARBURETTERS. Harper NORTHFIELD ROAD. :: COVENTRY. :: 16th December 1938. Messrs Rolls-Royce, Limited, DERBY. Dear Sirs, Reference:- Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/Les 2/ER. We are in receipt of your letter of the 15th inst., and in reply would inform you that it would be unnecessary to return the Pattern equipment to your Pattern Shop, as the conversion of the 6 Cylinder Block into the 8 Cylinder Block could be done in your own Foundry. We assume that you mount all your Cylinder Patterns on machine plates, and should this be the case, we should mark all pattern parts very carefully to line up to the main body of the pattern which would also be marked clearly to enable your men in the foundry to make the change over without any further assistance. We should also key where-ever possible the pattern parts were they fit one to another: further, we should number the various parts to the drawing number so that it would be practically impossible to get the wrong parts to the type of cylinder you require to make. The estimated time for the interchangeability would not be more than two hours, plus the time taken to remove the pattern plates from the moulding machine. We hope that we have expressed ourselves very clearly, and given you all the information you require, but if there are any further points you wish to raise, please do not hesitate to write us, as we are willing to help you all we can to our mutual advantage. We sincerely trust that we may have the good fortune to secure the order, and we can assure you that any confidence you place in us will not be misplaced. Yours faithfully, P.P.
