FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} [Stamped in blue] ORIGINAL [Handwritten over stamp] seen F.R. [Handwritten] X4269 [Handwritten in blue pencil in left margin] Hos My dear CJ., I think the cold temperature at Derby would hardly be practical and of the same value as being in a really cold climate on the road. I suggest it advisable to send any new chassis or part of it's trials in-to Canada, where there is an Arctic temperature. Possibly the highlands of central Europe would be just as satisfactory if we could avoid getting caught in snowstorms. Regarding the part broken by temperature, this I believe is a mistake. It will be found that the crack was due to fatigue caused by an overstress, something we didn't fore-see. I refer to the broken engine feet at Derby. Those run in the trials were, through a misunderstanding, fitted in a condition in which this stress was not generated. Yours ever, R.{Sir Henry Royce} [Stamp 1] RECEIVED JAN 16 1923 [Stamp 2] J.S.
