Re Phantom III Roller Tappets.
--------------------------------

Further to your memo. E.2/HP.13.11.36, we have investigated the effect of running the .9" diameter roller follower with the present cam forms, and the result is shown on LeC.5389.

The effect is to distort the valve lift curve very considerably reducing its area and giving a very low positive and consequently high negative acceleration. The acceleration at changeover would be approximately three times what it is at present.

In view of this severe distortion no useful purpose could be served by running the roller tappets with the existing cam forms. We are designing a new cam form for use with these roller tappets, which will be available if and when required.

It should be appreciated that it will not be possible to grind this new cam form on the Churchill Machine.
