X3117 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} S/KT. March 7th 1933. Donald Sessions & Co. Ltd., 906 Harrow Road, Willesden, London. N.W.10. For the attention of Mr. Donald Sessions. Dear Sirs, We have, as we rather anticipated, received criticisms bearing upon the time required and energy expended in lowering the D.W.S. jack from its box to the ground, and rewinding it up again after use. Two means of improving this suggest themselves to us. (1) Use two separate gear boxes (of widely different ratios) on the same handle. The two worms would be mounted on the same spindle and the changeover effected by removing the handle from the jack and replacing it in the other position. We may get into trouble with clearances, but perhaps it is worth investigating. In this case the third knob on the handle would be deleted. (2) The third knob on the handle, as pointed out to you recently, is at the best not really nice to use. Even with perfectly free jacks one has to use the ends of the fingers to operate it and by the time the operation is finished one's wrist aches. It would be possible to eliminate the third knob by making one of the remaining two knobs so that it could be made to slide along a slot from the outer to the inner position, and provide a quick release fixing for the two positions. One could then obtain a much better grip on the knob, and we feel the jack operation would be less tiring. We send these suggestions along to you for what they are worth and would like to hear your views. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED | ||
