X1015 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}12/KW. 4th September, 1936. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Wilks, Esq., The Rover Company Ltd., Coventry. Dear Mr. Wilks, Thank you for all the information you gave me on half floating axles yesterday. I have gone into the accuracy of our clutch mechanism, and find that the friction plate is parallel within .001", and that the parallelism of engagement of the pressure plate is within .001", which we measure as .005" at the end of the operating finger. As regards the transmission "clonking", the works try and keep the gearbox slack - measured at 1 1/2" on the clutch shaft - down to .001" in top gear and .005" in the other gears. After a small amount of running these clearances become about double. The axle is usually under 1° total and .004" at the pitch line on the pinion and crown wheel. Enclosed is also an arrangement drawing of our propellor shaft damper, which should show you all you need. Yours sincerely, (S.H.Grylls) FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
