GRY{Shadwell Grylls} x350 DY.{F R Danby} c. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} RWC. HV. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/HP.1.9.36. Phantom III Steering Columns. In order to improve the visibility on "E" and "F" columns, it is intended to raise these 1" each, leaving the "C" column where it is now. The original intention of the suggestion was to use only one column with one inch adjustment, either direction, but because of the tight spot in the centre of the lock and the position of the wheel spokes, it is not possible to arrange this, and three pendulum levers will be required. It is proposed however to retain the slots in the dashboard bracket for a Works adjustment, and it is now suggested that one existing dashboard bracket, E type, might be substituted for the 3 that are now used, this bracket having slots capable of giving an inch movement up and down. F.{Mr Friese} Dept. will look into this. We send herewith LeC.5256, a drawing showing the revised positions of the wheel to suit the new steerings, and the resulting angles of column. The discrepancy of approximately .625 in the column length, which had arisen in the present columns due to the change of steering wheel, has been eliminated on this drawing, and the dimension "A" shewn on the "C" column coachbuilders drawing has been maintained, so avoiding the loss of body space which must now be taking place. This will involve reducing the lengths of existing tubes. We understand Sales desire to discuss this proposed change of steering weights with coachbuilders, so that the drawing shewing the proposals, with the new angle of column etc. should be sent them. LeC.5256 herewith. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
