X8710. By/RD. from EFC. EFC5/AM.10.12.29. X. 8710. EXAMINATION OF FAULTY COILS. RETURNED FROM CUSTOMERS. In reply to your Ry/RD2/DM{D. Munro}30.11.29 and your further enquiry, the following is Mr.West's report WD.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}97. on the result of unwinding the coils in question for examination :- "We have unwound for examination in the laboratory, three standard ignition coils which have been returned from customers as faulty. In each case the fault was confirmed and diagnosed previous to unwinding as a short circuit on the secondary winding. The following is a report on the condition of each coil after unwinding :- Coil No. G-2-WX. Breakdown found at end of 4th. layer of secondary. Coil secondary badly wound with spaces and considerable ridges in the layers. Primary in good condition. Coil No. B-6-C. Breakdown found at the end of 2nd. layer. Breakdown was directly over the joint in the primary to secondary windings. Coil No. WH.65. Breakdown found at end of 2nd. layer. At this point the wire was badly distorted and the winding had actually crossed over itself on the same layer. The whole of the secondary was badly wound. From this evidence it will be seen that the faults appear to have been due to the faulty mechanical construction of the windings particularly in the case of WH.65." We are handing you herewith, for examination, the remains of WH.65 and meanwhile we are proceeding to unwind the furthe two coils mentioned in your Ry/RD3/DM{D. Munro}9.12.29. EFC. | ||
