Lt. Commander Young,
H.M.S. EXCELLENT,
Portsmouth.

Rolls-Royce 2 Pdr. Q.F. Mark IIV Gun.

Dear Commander Young,

The following modifications are in hand for the above gun. They will be incorporated on all guns now being supplied and we will arrange to carry out the alterations on Gun No. S.4870 now installed in Motor A/S Boat No. 15 as soon as the parts are complete and you can make arrangements for the gun to be available for one day.

(1) Modified ejection chute.

(2) Modification to foresight bracket, transferring bosses to forward side to give clear path for the ejected case.

(3) Modification to steel packing pieces in ejection opening to give cleaner ejection.

(4) A muzzle cover of synthetic rubber is being provided, attached to the cradle by a light chain, and a boss is being provided on the cradle on which this cover may be placed when the gun is fired.

(5) A light extension is being provided on the end of the barrel (rather like a bayonet) which, engaging with a deflector rail forward of the gun, will prevent the weapon being aimed at the boat's superstructure. We suggest that if this device were replaced by a flash eliminator of orthodox design, it could fulfil the dual purpose of damping the flash and acting as an extension to run on the deflector rail.
