With regard to the trouble of oil loss from the gearbox, we should like to make sure of two points -

(1) That the box is fitted with the correct dip stick, in which case the box should hold 6 pints of oil, and

(2) That the diaphragm between the two compartments has the latest type hole in it to prevent the level of oil in the rear compartment being an inch or so higher than in the front.

You might let us know whether, when filling the gearbox, you have any trouble with the oil not flowing immediately into all compartments.

We wired you yesterday about omitting the felt behind the flywheel tail bearing as on the cars we have here this felt lasts a very short time and seems unnecessary.

On SpectreCodename for Phantom III II we have removed the flywheel tail bearing and confirmed your result that the pressure in the clutch pit is very much less when this bearing is absent.

We also ran into the trouble of roughness of the engine when running in neutral with the clutch engaged. With the clutch disengaged and the Hardy fabric not rotating, the engine is quite smooth. We remember your car suffering from a similar trouble before it left for France. Perhaps you would confirm that when the bearing is re-fitted you no longer complain of so much engine roughness.

If the Oilite bush is satisfactory, and the tail bearing keeps sufficiently lubricated without the felt, we shall probably go into production with this scheme.
