To: Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From G.A.H. Y 840 Hôtel de France, Châteauroux. 2/3/30. We have reported the failure of the C & A washers of the manifold joints. We enquired before leaving Derby for here whether the Stores had any C & A washers with the steel centre similar to what one or two of our cars are fitted with, but could not obtain any. The idea of the inside being made of steel is to prevent the washers pulling to pieces with the constant friction of the exhaust manifolds. It would be very useful if some of these washers could be obtained for the 20-HP and to let us have a set to try. Re the exhaust downtake pipe from the manifold to the silencer, the distortion of this pipe places too much stress on the manifold and on the silencer. We propose fixing a more flexible mounting holding the silencer to relieve the stress set up and allow for the expansion and contraction. We should be pleased to receive any other method of dealing with this. The told axle trouble is not developing rapidly, and we hope that it will not cause us to be held up. We have not interfered with the housing at all, having no drawing of its construction. We do not wish to destroy any evidence of the fault without first knowing how to tackle it. We should be pleased to know whether Mr. Elliott has been able to solve the camshaft squeak on the Phantom. G.A.H. | ||
