RE FAILURE OF P & R CELL IN SS. {S. Smith} BATTERY (180)

The above cell failed after only two years' service.

Mr. Preston from Messrs. P & R was here and witnessed the opening up of this cell. All the plates and separators were good and failure was due to negative growth adhering to the edge of the separators and bridging from the positive to the negative plates; the reason of this was that the separators were narrow by 1/4" and this afforded a good chance for the negative growth to ledge between the plates. The amount of sediment was small, being only 1/8" deep.
