X9520 SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} RL/M27.11.30. C. to WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} SPRINGING - re. CAR RUNNING WITH INCREASED DEFLECTION. X.7410. X.8410. X.7520. X.7350. We are all agreed that this is the only way we know of giving satisfactory riding qualities. You will understand that I have never fixed any standard of initial deflection but have suggested that it can only be settled by experience, which, for P. 1. and 2. seems to be 10" back, and 4.5" front. I agree to this, but it is not practical to have 5.5" at the front. If PN.{Mr Northey} is satisfied with the higher speed qualities, steering, and rolling, I think we shall have to struggle with the other difficulties of the greater sensitiveness in exact adjustment to the weight. Derby seem to have been for some time in favour of stiffer springs, probably due to, increased speed The rear dampers will be (I think) much improved by the shorter lever - 10" - and which demands a limit of 10" to the axle travel (by sling, as tested and found OK.) This should be pressed forward. R.{Sir Henry Royce} P.S. I telegraphed this morning as follows - "SG{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} - Not necessary send car quite prepared to "agree increased deflection to 10" and 4.5" "Satisfied Northey's judgment at high speeds. "Complete resume by post tonight" R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
