With reference to PN.{Mr Northey}17/WT23.11.31 and PN.{Mr Northey}4/KT24.11.31. This complaint of bonnet lock wearing the bonnet strip away is well known. More than four years' ago W.W. designed the bar type bonnet lock N.S.2372 to overcome this complaint. The Standardisation Sheet I.1140/7260 is dated 17.12.29. After some parts had already been made the bar type lock was withdrawn from production owing to the additional cost. With the increased frame deflection with Diamond engine mounted cars the above complaint is worse. We have pointed out in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.2/KT.5.11.31. that the restricted lateral movement and the difficulty of closing the bonnet are advantages of the present Vaughan lock. 'd' Bonnet locks are now only fitted to order, and in such cases we consider it necessary to use the bar type lock to N.S.2372. Will BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please issue instructions.
