FO 1065 Experimental Department 19th December 1936. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}3/AP. A.R.Smith Esq., Messrs Ford Motor Co.Ltd., Dagenham, ESSEX Dear Sir, Regarding the information concerning the interference fits for the valve inserts, as included in your letter of the 16th inst., we should be much obliged if you could let us have the following details in connection with the same job. Assuming that the insert is fitted after shrinking in liquid air, is the block warmed up to further reduce the interference fit.? If this is so, will you please let us know the cold insert and the warm block temperatures and the actual interference fit under these conditions when the insert is driven home.? Further, can you tell us in what material the insert is made and send a sketch of the dimensions which we could scale for trial on one of our engines.? We have little or no experience in the press fitting of inserts into a block of similar expansion value, our seats being in N.M.C. and screwed into an aluminium head. We shall be very grateful if it is possible for you to send the above details. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
