SECRET X3949 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. CJ. BJ. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} PN.{Mr Northey} EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} R1/M1.2.24. 3rd E.A.C. ENGINE X.3949. X.9790. I was extremely pleased to hear that the design of oil retainer at the rear end, that E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and myself schemed, promises to be successful. This trouble has not been a very glaring one but of long standing and the better oil retaining will be a decided advantage if only in cleanliness. For a long time we all thought it was a leaky joint, and at first schemes the 2 long bolts to hold the two halves together better. This is good anyway, and fortunately now we have touched the real cause of leakage the scheme might be of use to the aero engines. Regarding the governing of the magneto ignition advance you will notice in a memo. of mine I ask if there is any advantage in always running both ignitions. If not only run the battery which is governed, and keep the magneto as a standby. I am not suggesting that we alter it to Goshawk type (though this would be simpler and less costly if it was thought as good or better because the unused plugs might get dirty) but keep it as it is and arrange that the magneto was not on except for testing and reserve. If we wanted to do so it may be we should have to alter the switch again which would be sad but I should like to know what we desire and then we could find if we could do it, and the best way. I believe the switchbox insists upon the magneto being on if we want the charge on. This is perfect if we want to always use the magneto except while testing, but hardly ideal if we desire to charge and use battery ignition only. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will say what is most desirable after the governed magneto. Owing to the trouble with the brakes I have done nothing about more about our control for both ignitions by the one governor. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
