ORIGINAL HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} R.{Sir Henry Royce}) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} C. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} HL. re. STARTER MOTORS. OIL-LESS BEARINGS. R1/M24.1.32. Sent from WW. 28.1.32. X6079. I thank HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/WST. for his memo. I am not sure that I like bearings without oil, and I certain should make pretty/before adopting them. Ball or roller bearings will run for many years with one filling of vaseline, and this practice I should prefer. Also, if we need an oilless bearing it is more than likely that we shall find a better one than we can invent, because there has been much work done on this matter in connection with trolley pullies for electric trams etc. Also I do not think a gum like substance such as bakelite at all suitable. It, and any filling like asbestos, will sure to make a bad heat conductor. Mr. Hall should test its value as a bearing, as I fear also the co-efficient of friction would be high.
