WORKS EXPERIENCE.—While at the University of Bristol I obtained general workshop experience in the various departments of the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co.'s Motor Constructional Works, as indicated in the accompanying testimonials. I also had a subsequent training in the shops of the Bristol Aeroplane Co. Ltd., Filton, where I obtained first-hand knowledge of the highest grade fitting, machining, and assembling, as carried out in these works. Subsequent to graduation in 1931 I have been employed at the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co.'s motor maintenance department at Lawrence Hill, Bristol. This Department maintains one of the largest Fleets of Public Service Vehicles in England, and the Company is noted for their specialized system of day-dock overhauling, with its resultant low cost of maintenance. During my experience with this Company I have been privileged to work as one of the men in all the branches of chassis maintenance. This has included specialized overhaul work on engines, front axles, rear axles, transmission, brakes, clutches, etc. I have also been permitted to make a special study of the best system of reducing maintenance costs to a minimum, whilst adhering to a high standard of mechanical efficiency. For complete details of the methods adopted reference may be made to the accompanying reprint of an address by W. Lewis Morgan, Esq., A.M.I.A.E. All the above work has been carried out in intimate and daily contact with the various workmen concerned. COMMISSION IN ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS.—As a result of practical and theoretical army training with the University Officers' Training Corps, and in view of my Engineering qualifications, I was granted, after passing the army medical examination, a commission in the motor transport section of the Royal Army Service Corps, being gazetted in February, 1932, but for private reasons I decided not to accept the Commission. This training has, nevertheless, been of the utmost use to me in the management of men and in obtaining the best service from them. GENERAL ORGANIZING AND OTHER EXPERIENCE.—Whilst at the University of Bristol I held responsible positions as Vice-President of the University Union, Chairman of the Engineering Society, and Captain of the University Rifle Club and Tennis Club, and obtained University "Blues" for both. I was also elected Student Representative on the Committee of the Western Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and have travelled extensively in Australia and North America. | ||
