No. X8940 REF Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}5/LG26.2.25. S E C R E T. EAC. 'V' SERIES - 98-NK CAR. X8770 8940 We ran 98-NK car 1500 miles in France. The general impression of the car after that run was as follows :- The car was particularly smooth both on forward drive and on retard. Under favourable conditions - road etc., we maintained 80 m.p.h., which was the maximum the speedometer would register. The engine was quieter than the 40/50 HP. at all speeds. The petrol consumption was [strikethrough]on the high side[/strikethrough] approximately 12 m.p.g. which is the same as we have obtained with the 40/50 HP. on the same route. The average oil consumption was on the high side. It appeared to be excessively high when the car was driven at high speeds. At normal speeds, it did not appear excessive. The following are points which we suggest should be modified before the next car is sent to France to run 10,000 miles :- (1) Engine Undershields. These are not effective. A considerable amount of mud got through on to the brake mechanism and also was splashed up over the engine. Mr. Jenner from WW. is at the Works scheming out some louvred side guards similar to the 40/50 HP. The first experimental set is now being made. contd :- | ||
