RE "GOSHAWK II". X42-19 X4244

With reference to "Goshawk II", I am extremely pleased and surprised with the number of features on this chassis which shew distinct improvement. As time will not permit us to gloat over these we had better get to work in trying to put the imperfect ones right.

OVER-RUNNING CAUSING DIRECT DRIVE CLUTCH TO DISENGAGE.

I have thought of many things of why this should come out and all of them have been answered by conclusions that it ought to stay in, except that one feels certain that the teeth ends had been over-rounded on the over-running sides of engagement, and therefore pushing the gears asunder when the car over-runs the engine. To prove this we might see that the gears are properly engaged and whether another pair which is known to have less rounding has the same fault. One feels as though the spring plunger should push the gears back if and when the load is released, unless by any means the spring plunger is not in a proper position and in its notch.

CLUTCH PLATE.

In addition to the experiment of splitting the plate, I think we ought to try a corrugated centre. I also think that we might test a ring of steel carried on serrations of a larger radius. This would appear to be the most easy way of making the plate, and so like the usual rings of a large plate clutch using many plates, that we may find it work like a charm. Speaking generally the clutch promises well but for this slight defect of the plate warping through unequal heating which should be easily surmountable.

While this matter is under discussion, I would like to
