they rather jealously guard this material and the processes.

Should we adopt P & R cells for standard
or
either on the 40/50,/Goshawk, or both, this will be one of the great advantages, that we shall eliminate, probably entirely, faults due to cracked cells.

The P & R BD{Mr Berend}11 suggested as standard for the 40/50 is only 1 1/2 lbs heavier than our present standard, and owing to the fact that it does not need a containing case, the increase in weight will be a few pounds less than this figure. The quoted price of the battery is considerably less than our present standard, but it is probable that the extra cost of the Exide represents to some extent the better service that will be obtainable with the Exide battery. Thus the objection on the score of weight does not apply to any extent in this case. Both Exide and P & R batteries for the 40/50 are rated at 75 ampere hours. This capacity was obtained on test on the Exide, but not on the P & R, but the nature of the plates was such that they took a number of charges and discharges before the full capacity was realised. This is a result of the way in which the paste is pressed into the grids, between flannel pads, after pasting, by means of hand presses.

The possibility of standardising the P & R battery without the Exide might therefore be considered, though it was agreed that two simultaneous standards should be adopted, and of the batteries we have had for trial, we have selected the above two as the most promising.
