Hives London File From: Mr. Olley TEST REPORT Water Pump - Section 5180 See X9687. ch/c/1.10.76 Off MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}-1, first O.H. valve test car, after 14,000 miles. 1. Spindle (Rustless steel i.e. high nickel "Cyclops 17A") the most wear was .003 at the rear - impeller end - packing gland. Pump had a No.1 Bijur drip plug. Packings were soaked with oil and bearings were oily. The packings had worn the spindle slightly but in so doing had burnished the spindle so that (probably) future wear would be slight. Spindle had not had a preliminary burnishing with a roller tool as we do on present pumps. This will be done in future. 2. End Stop, for spindle was lignum vitae (Derby model). This started to crack. On one or two imported Phantoms the wood has cracked and fallen out, letting the impeller run forward and score the casing. We are proposing to use an Ackermite (Lead-Bronze) stop, but stainless steel - hardened - might be best. 3. We propose to use the Silver Ghost type of Oldham coupling for driving the water pump. This coupling with fiber disc, has never given a moment's trouble, whereas the Phantom shaft with serrated coupling has given trouble with rattling and squeaking. In mounting the fiber-disc coupling on MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}-1, however we made a mistake and left both spindles too long so that they entered the fiber disc which is a close fit on the spindle. | ||
