point which had n't been properly sintered - At 18,000 miles there was no sign of this trouble.

This may have accounted for the trouble reported by Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager} in which one side of the pump ceased working but recovered after a knock and continued running untouched for the rest of the mileage. Though we suspect a bad connection to the pump.

Water excluding sleeves.

The water excluding sleeve was loose in the rear unit and not in position.

There was rust inside the rear unit which had been caused by a small pool of water lying in the bottom of the pot.

These excluders were hand made at Burton and were not as tight a fit as the moulded products now available.

Valves.

All valves were clean and in excellent condition.

Filters.

There was a small amount of fluff on the gauze but insufficient to warrant cleaning.

General.

The screws holding the units to the body though not fitted with spring washers were tight and there was no leakage from the bottom plugs, although these are fitted with fibre washers.

The white grease which had been applied to the front rollers had been absorbed by the diaphragm and as the wear was not less in this case there seems to be no point in using grease which might cause trouble with dust.
