| X250 To L. c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Du. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} 2/JH.10.7.36. Bentley Steering Joints. Re E.9/dP.13.5.36. Owing to the fact that 6-B-IV will be fitted with aluminium front brake drums to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}55, it has recently been found necessary to fit the cross steering levers designed for use with 14" iron drums. This is for the purpose of giving reasonable clearance between the drums and the cross steering tube. These levers, unfortunately, cannot be modified to suit the new steering joint to N.Sch.4797, and as new forgings cannot be prepared in time, we are unable to fit the new joint to 6-B-IV. The rear side steering tube joint to N.Sch.4800 will be fitted. In view of this we suggest that we should standardise the joint specified on standardisation sheet X.250.3.4.36. for use until the new joint can be run 10,000 miles. Will By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please detail some steering levers similar to the ones to suit 14" drums to GB.2059/60, but modified at the ends to accommodate the new steering joint.
