X5009 X719 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY1-P1.6.23. 40/50 CHASSIS. SPECIAL CLUTCH MATERIAL SUPPLIED BY FERODO LIMITED. Referring to the special clutch which you are running, supplied to us by Mr Frood, which is practically all made up of asbestos and wire woven to give mechanical strength, I wrote him pointing out that we thought the co-efficient of friction would demand an increase of the spring strength between 20 and 30%, and that our opinion was that the co-efficient of friction was that amount down on this material, as compared with the cotton we were using at the moment, as supplied by the Scandinavian Belt Company. In reply to my letter in a communication of the 31st ultimo., he agrees that the co-efficient of friction of the new lining is less than that of the cotton lining we are using, by at least 25%. Mr Frood is anxious to try this material on a plate clutch; since it appears to be much more loosely woven it should have a very much easier take up than the present material, and therefore possibly you would like me to obtain sufficient material to give it a trial on the 20HP clutch.
