No. Car 2201. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 19.8.13. PC20/W19a1. With reference to the attached report from Mr.Royce, re. running of car 2201. I have had the opportunity of trying this car last weekend, and report as follows:- I did not have an opportunity of trying this car before it originally left the works for Mr.Royce, and cannot, therefore, speak definitely as regards vibration development; also, since Mr.Royce's report I understand that two of the connecting rods on this engine have been broken and the engine is now running with a set of new, although similar, light connecting rods. When I first tried this car I was not able to form a definite opinion about this vibration, owing to the detonations being so bad. Fixing the magneto so as to work on the intermediate ignition plugs, however, made the car much more satisfactory. The engine was exceptionally powerful, and was very 'good' as regards 'sweet' running at high engine speeds, absence of vibration on retard, etc. The engine, however, was very vigorous, and the vibrations, due to pulsations, at slow speeds, were certainly very excessive. Except for this trouble, I thought that on the run ran very nicely and gave exceptionally good powers both at low and high speeds. 1.- As regards the points mentioned by Mr.Royce. The magneto ignition was not quite normal but I am given to understand from Mr.Hives that when the car originally came back from Mr.Royce the ignition was advanced more than normal, which would probably account for the engine being more hard running than at present. 2.- As regards the carbon deposits... | ||
