Y8980 BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. Bd.{Mr Berend} re: OVEROILING. With regard to the question of ignition plugs for the "New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I" Chassis, for which the Lodge non-detachable type is the present standard. Arrangements were made for a number of Lodge Plugs to be obtained of the detachable type which are similar to the present standard Lodge plugs, except that they can be dismantled for cleaning purposes. These detachable plugs appear to be satisfactory on the Production cars on which they have been fitted, and I shall be glad if consideration can be given to these being definitely standardised, to the exclusion of the non-detachable type, so that we can as soon as possible despatch all "New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I" Chassis with the detachable type of plug. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} will no doubt be able to say whether they agree that we are in a position to standardise this type of plug. Sales Dept. view this as rather an important point. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} was at the Works the other day, and thinks that if we are in a position to standardise this detachable plug we should do so as soon as possible. He points out that the trouble in several cases is that the customer has not been so annoyed due to the plugs oiling up as at being unable to keep going owing to using up his spares, which would be overcome if he could have cleaned the existing plugs. Although it must be admitted that this detachable plug has not had 10,000 miles test, I submit that it may be a great help on the overoiling question, and recommend that a standardisation sheet be circulated stating the reason for recommending its use and such experiences as we have so far had with it. Whilst on this matter, a further point was brought up in conversation with H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} at the Works, namely, the question of why we are plugging up the oil holes to the unlet rockers on some cars and not on others. I pointed out that when Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and myself were with Mr. Royce it had been agreed that this could be done on chassis on test which showed a tendency to overoil, but we have not | ||
