Mr Royce suggests that we should make an apparatus that would enable the inspector to load each steering lever in alternate directions to a stress equal to 60 to 80% of the elastic limit, the part to be tested being attached to a shaft which is capable of being turned through a complete circle.

The scheme must be such that the stress will be applied in the same directions as the load when in use.
The object of such an alternating test is to open out any serious flaw as well as detecting the soft and other unsuitable material.
