Contd. -2- R.R. COIL. Current passed through in best sparking direction. Running current at 500 R.P.M. of contact breaker = 1.00 amps. " reduced to .70 amp. before any definite misfire was noticed at 5-6 mm. spark gaps. i.e. a reduction of 30% in running current. REMY COIL. Current passed through in best sparking direction. Running current at 500 R.P.M. of contact breaker = 1.70. " Only reduced to 1.30 i.e. by 23.5% before definite misfiring was noticed at spark gaps. The R.R. coil should therefore give adequate spark energy to allow for the worst conditions likely to occur in use. The following causes of the defect suggest themselves:- A. {Mr Adams} On account of the high secondary potential in the R.R. coil and the rather small dimensions of the coil, the internal and external insulation of the secondary winding may be somewhat highly stressed, and leakage may intermittently occur under adverse conditions (i.e. low speed and high compression); when unless the greatest care is taken in construction and material; as for instance in the case of the first coils made in experimental department.
