S/W Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}; C4/C28.1.35 Re 20/25 Clutches...21-G-4. ---------- I enclose herewith copy of Br's report on the experimental clutch. You will see he again emphasises the necessity of driving the car in London traffic. You mentioned in your previous memo. that you were going to fit one up shortly on my car and there is one on Lp{Mr Lappin}'s car, but what we really want is one fitted on a car that can run 100 miles a day all in London traffic, for about 10 days. 21-G-4 is the ideal car for the purpose, because that particular clutch has already done 15,000 miles of your hard tests in France. ..... Confirming our conversation on the telephone this morning, we feel very strongly that 21-G-4 should carry out driving tests in London before completing its work, and note you will let us have this car at the beginning of next week so that we may test it under London conditions provided we arrange to let you have 20-EX back at the end of this week. Of course, this test of traffic driving was supposed to be a part of your tests, and was inaugurated after the trouble we had with the Phantom some time ago now; and when it comes to a clutch it surely ought to be tested under the most difficult circumstances, namely, continual stopping and starting and slow running in London. I note that Lp{Mr Lappin}'s car has already done 15,000 miles, but of course this car is not available to do continuous traffic work, as it is used mainly for long runs, although, of course, it has to do a certain amount of traffic work C. | ||
