HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Copy to WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} [crossed out] " " RY. [crossed out] SECRET 'SS{S. Smith}' CHASSIS. X3S06 X7420 X7770 With reference to HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/LG31129:- (1) We have sent you N. sch. 2817 an arrangement for using the 12-EX. system of lubrication on the SS.{S. Smith} axle control arm. (2) We will look into the question of lubrication of the cams and send you proposals in a day or two. (3) We have agreed to your suggestion re. lubricating the cross steering tube ball ends, and have suggested some grooves in addition. (4) We have sent you a design for a solid coupling. (5) The Front damper shaft which broke appears to be the intermediate one which was only slightly strengthened. We are hoping that you are about to try the final strengthening - (approximately 35%) which we expect will be a great improvement in life. Would BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} kindly send us the detail drawing of the final strengthened shaft on N. sch. 2795. (6) We will send you further suggestions for the headlamps in the course of a few days. (7) We will also send you a scheme of the shutter control though we should have thought that this would be more accurately done by temporarily providing a variable lever both as to length and position, on one of the driving shafts, and ascertaining the best setting from actual experience on the road. (8) We are altering the Bijur tank to give more capacity as requested by telegram, and will deal with the size of the filler at the same time. (9) We thought that the plug in the frame with a simple pipe connection to the pump was already in use on SS.{S. Smith}, and we suggest that it should be put in hand immediately.
