X.4617 - 40/50 HP. CHASSIS BATTERY. SPECIFICATION 301.
EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 1/T8.3.24.

With reference to your Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 11/NJ21.7.24, Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 13/NJ30.7.24 and Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 1/NJ11.8.24, we have looked over the remarks from Messrs. P & R. {Sir Henry Royce} and The Chloride Co. on the several clauses of our specification No.301. and our own comments are as follows :-

With reference to the remarks of Messrs. P & R. {Sir Henry Royce} under cover of your Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 11/NJ21.7.24:-

Clause 1. - We prefer not to be over optimistic as regards the capacity of the battery, as the figures we have given for the actual capacity seem reasonably right in proportion to those which we have given for the 20 HP. As a matter of fact, from Messrs. P & R's battery of this type which we have tested, we have only realised 53 ampere-hours (6.63 average amperes for 8 hours down to 10.5 volts), in each of two successive discharges which we have made, though this battery was received by us from them in a fully charged condition, and we are trusting that this capacity will increase with use, as has been our experience previously with P & R batteries. (The Exide on the other hand has given rather more than its rated ampere-hours in the first instance, and we expect this not to increase, but if anything to fall off somewhat with successive discharges.

Contd.
