WELLWORTHY PISTON RINGS LTD., LYMINGTON HANTS WORKS TELEPHONE LYMINGTON 520 WORKS TELEGRAMS "WELLWORTHY" PRIVATE TELEPHONE LYMINGTON 232 MANAGING DIRECTOR'S OFFICE JH/CJR. 15th February, 1939. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Derby. Dear Robotham, Thanks very much for yours of February 10th. As Piston manufacturers we are terribly interested in what you have to tell us about the possibilities of a Piston head which will give 8-1 compression ratio, and if there is any possibility of our taking it up and manufacturing it for the trade for you on a royalty basis, we shall be very pleased indeed to go into it with you. Can I leave the matter in your hands, or can I get in touch with Mr. Hives or Mr. Wilson about it. I understand Mr. Blackith is visiting you tomorrow, Thursday 16th, and if there is anything we can do to co-operate with you in this matter, we shall be most happy to do so. There is, however, one point that I should like you to chat over with Mr. Blackith, and that is this: with our experience of certain Pistons which we are making for the Diesel people, where they have formed the head of the piston into a sort of pre-combustion chamber or something on these lines, although of course you may have something entirely different, there has been a tendency for this to create excessive cylinder wear owing to the fact that when the projection came out of the chamber there seemed to be a violent swirl with the gasses, which set up cylinder wear at that particular point. However, perhaps if you could chat it over with Mr. Blackith for a few moments it would be very helpful. By the way, I understand that Stones of Deptford are supplying an aluminium bearing material. Do you know anything regarding it? Yours sincerely, J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Howlett | ||
