WATFORD E.O.6. MAGNETO WITH ENCLOSED ARMATURE TUNNEL IN ONE PIECE.

With reference to my previous memo, and EFC3/T.23.3.27, from our experience of the running of the present combination of gears, Bakelite pinion and aluminium wheel, we do not anticipate very much advantage in the proposed change to all Bakelite. One does not expect a combination of this kind to run as well, although it may be slightly more silent, as a combination consisting of one metal and one Bakelite unit.

I should therefore be prepared, (and in this MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} concurrs), to leave out the all-Bakelite combination entirely. If Messrs North are keen on it, we suggest that they incorporate it in the new type magneto.

With reference to the material of the tunnel, it is very essential that we should have two factors -

1. Rigidity.

2. Wearing capacity.

In neither of these characteristics is aluminium outstanding, and therefore from a design point of view I would prefer not to worry with an aluminium tunnel. I am fairly certain also that Messrs North & Sons. are of a similar opinion, hence their reason for making the tunnel in bronze.
