X4078 EFCL/T. 27th April, 1927. Mr. G.R.N.Minchin, Messrs. Peto & Radford, 50, Grosvenor Gardens, S.W.1. X4040 Dear Mr. Minchin, We have your letter of the 22nd. inst. dealing mainly with the auto charge reducing switch. X860 Referring to the output of your special dynamo, I do not think, comparing your figures with our curve, that the output is less than we intended it to be. We definitely arranged it to be an exaggeratedly reduced output. We can quite understand that the battery has not required anything like so frequent topping up, and I am not altogether surprised that this output curve has kept the battery up, but I do not think we can infer from this fact in your case that such an output will invariably maintain customers' batteries in proper condition, in view of the fact that there are sometimes complaints of under-charging which may or may not be due to the starterbeing improperly used. I think it is much safer to have the automatic scheme which will give the full rate of charge when it is necessary as determined by the voltage of the system, as in our opinion a high rate of charge to a battery, except in the final stages of charge, is not detrimental. It is agreed that the auto switch is not the type which needs a prolonged test, nevertheless it will be necessary, to be in line with R.R. principles. I cannot quite see in what way I contradicted myself in my report unless you read the sentence at the bottom of my first page without noticing the "not". As regards being in agreement that there must be a charging switch, we stated that we had formed the opinion that the charging switch should not be deleted, but that it should be | ||
