28-EX. Rear Axle.

The above axle has been dismantled for examination after 25,000 miles.

The general condition of the axle was good, but the following points were found to require attention.

Pinion Bearing - New departure type G.76879.

One of the outer races had broken up on the track and a new bearing had to be fitted. The old bearing has been returned to Hoffman's for examination.

Differential

The trunnion had worked loose in the diff. housing and the pinions had been fouling the casing. The abnormal rate of wear is attributed to poor machining in the bores of the diff. housing, this having been drawn from production as an assembled unit.
There was .020 wear on the G.79832 ball end pins in the shock absorber brackets.

Rear Brakes

General condition good. Foot brake linings worn down to rivet heads. Hand Brake linings good.

Rear Hubs.

Brake drums were worn .030 on the Foot Brake section. A sample of the Brake Drum material was submitted to the Laboratory for analysis, the attached being a copy of their report.
