STEERING - X.9430

I omitted to mention that if the new EAC.1 and 2. steering column is adopted some modification seems necessary to make the steering easier.

(1) We could reduce the speed of the steering to that of our earlier suggestion, but still keeping it somewhat quicker than the hispano.

(2) We could fit ball or roller bearings each side where the heavy loads from the worm create friction on the pendulum lever shaft.

(3) We might find out if the nut really gives a large bearing area on the worm. Mr. hardy and I spent a long time on this design and it ought to be superior to the one we have had in use so long, in robustness, and oil retaining; it is surprising that it shews more friction but in some ways we should have preferred this as it is slightly less reversible which has often been desired. Suggestion (1) above will also make it more irreversible but the steering less heavy.
