( IO ) rear brakes were not satisfactory. The locking of the top cone was not sound and it tightened down on the balls, causing periodic jamming of the equalizer, with consequent ill effects on the brake operation. It was found that the adjusters allowed the brakes to be set with so little clearance, that the handbrake could hardly be pulled to the first notch, and the pedal had an unpleasantly solid feel. The linings showed rapid wear after fitting the new drums with Lepaz liners and were worn down to the rivets after 8.600 miles. New linings were sent from Derby and fitted at Paris Depot. It was noted that the O.S. liners wore more quickly than the N.S. and that the top liners were more quickly than the bottom liners in both brakes. Light squeaks were experienced from the rear brakes throughout the running, and crackles on contraction from the aluminium drums. FRONT BRAKES. GIRLING BRAKES fitted. Lined with S.66II material. FRONT HUB. LOP. GB.2398. Aluminium Brake Drums. New complete to above LOP. incorporating:- Ex.24357 Brake Drums. GB. 2395 "Brimol" Liners. Various objections such as excessive pedal pressure and inadequate braking were raised against these brakes and it can only be said that during the small mileage they covered all the defects which were present could not receive attention, so that a true value for the system cannot be given. These brakes had to be replaced by a standard front axle complete after 2.500 miles on account of an accident. The O.S. front brake drum with "Brimol" liner was run a further 3.000 miles. During this time, bad contraction crackles were experienced and the liner finally became loose in the drum, but no movement actually occurred. A new aluminium drum with Millenite liner was fitted. The brakes on this standard axle fitted at 2500 miles were lined with Ferodo SS.{S. Smith}66/II and the aluminium drums supplied with this axle had Millenite liners. Front brake squeaks with these brakes were the worst experienced. They were cured shortly before the end of the mileage by increasing the poundage on the pilot shoes from | ||
