My dear BJ.,

CARS IN GENERAL.

X8770 X5770 X5771
X8410 X8771

I am coming up to London on Thursday the 8th inst., but shall be employed at Mr. Claremont's office on Royce Ltd. business probably from 12 to 5 o'c, but I hope to call in at Conduit St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} for a quarter of an hours talk at about 11.30 a.m., my train being due at London Bridge at about 11 o'c.

Regarding the car problems generally one feels that the most important thing is to get the very best road riding and steering, and at the same time in parallel with this, I should like to point out that there are two ways of improving the car generally.

The first way is to use a moderate speed engine such as we are now using, and an easily available and silent 3rd. gear, such as could be obtained by one of the epicyclic schemes that I have often studied.

The second way is to construct the engine almost regardless of cost, in such a form that it will give excellent HP., and extremely silent and smooth running at increased revolutions.

These I will discuss with you when next we meet.

In the meantime we are making general improvements to both the 40HP. and 20HP. engines, but we do not expect any wonderful impressions from increased HP. at increased speed because it is so rarely that the engine is running at these increased revs. where only the improved HP. is available.

Yours ever, R.{Sir Henry Royce}
