X7690 To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}, from EFC. EFC3/T15.4.25. BATTERY IGNITION CONTACT POINTS. X.7690 The exact reason for bad pitting of these points, which incidentally does not appear to occur seriously and scarcely at all on our rig, on the 20 HP. chassis, is somewhat obscure. In a similar case at the Works on 46-PK some arcing was noticed at the points. By replacing the points with new ones and cleaning up the condenser connections this arcing disappeared. We suggest that in this case also the condenser connections be cleaned, i.e. the side of the condenser case making connection with the bow-spring and also the insulated condenser connection under the nut. It is possible that there is insufficient ventilation in the distributor head and we are making an experiment on a distributor head with small holes round the central terminal between the numbers for the ingress of air, the air being expelled as usual through the gauze. Dynamo failing to charge for the first 20 miles. X8660 The cutout and commutator appearing to be in good order it seems possible that the non-charge for the first 20 miles is due to a film of oil on one set of brushes, which must be the positive or control set, as if the negative set, the field fuse ought to go.
