A1. IMPROVED PHANTOM. The following comments are with reference to the papers marked A.{Mr Adams} B. and C. and are the result of discussions between Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} and PN.{Mr Northey} Dealing with A.{Mr Adams} first. There are many points which merely appear to require our agreement and we wish this to be understood in the absence of remarks qualifying agreement. ENGINE NO. 7. Hardy coupling. The life of this part must be improved. NO.9. We consider that as so many valves incidental to 12 cylinders self-adjusting tappits should be provided. BRAKES. No.1. We should welcome any simplification in operation and attention, but must not sacrifice any reliability or effectiveness. No.2. Yes, but if full automatic adjustment not feasible, then simple-point adjustment. No. 5. Very important. No. 6. Yes, but consistency and remaining "put" is of greatest importance. STEERING. We would like to have cross-steering tube ends which remained properly loaded, or alternatively, adjustments of a nature which a reasonably trained chauffeur could keep O.K. without having to come into a Service Station. CLUTCH. Greater accessibility is desirable, provision for easy adjustment, and careful consideration to be given to a form of automatic clutch control. SHOCK DAMPERS. We consider that other forms of variable friction than hydraulic should be kept in view, directly variable damping becomes possible. CHANGE SPEED LEVER. The position of this in future should be watched, there being much to be said for central position, and as many people like the side position as those who like central. We do not like the push-down lever (for reverse) as on 19-EX. Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} suggests a pull-up lever which he found satisfactory on some Bentley chassis. Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} would like it to be possible for all gears to be silent. | ||
