Initial of person addressed: J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Main Body: In reply to your memo CJ14/T11713 in which you enquire - re Bagshaw 1939 - whether we have altered the metal for our rear brakes, we wish to state that Mr Nadin informs us that we instructed the Makers of our brake shoes nearly two years ago, as a result of a complaint from Mr Platford, to make the shoes somewhat harder, and we have continued to purchase the same brake shoe castings from them without alteration as far as ordinary manufacturing methods allow, ever since. The Order Office have assured us that they are immediately going into the question of getting some harder brake shoe castings, but it is difficult to obtain cast iron brake shoes absolutely uniform in quality, but in future we intend to instruct our inspectors to very carefully watch the castings which are machined and to throw out any which appear to be softer than usual. We instructed one of our inspectors to make a comparative test on a Scleroscope between some old and new brake shoes, the old Handwritten Note in margin: Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} That is the point of the full test.
