40/50 HP. Normal Type Axle Springs

Following our recent conversation, attached please find copy of a statement I addressed to the Drawing Office on June 28th, summarizing the position.

I would amplify same by giving the following information:-

1 - In the early part of 1930, when 40/50 HP. Chassis were selling in reasonable numbers, we had standardised what we know as the Normal type Axle Spring.

2 - In the middle of 1930, the fashion changed entirely, and much higher poundages were substituted in current production. In many cars already built up the Springs were changed accordingly, brand new Springs being substituted.

3 - Early in 1931, when production of 40/50 HP. Chassis had come almost to a standstill, a scheme was mooted to convert such lighter type Springs to heavier types. This was proved out by the Experimental Department, and finally agreed about the middle of 1931.

Since that date we have carried on by converting in small quantities, as and when required, but the continued and increasing demand for the Continental type Chassis has restricted us in this direction. Originally we were making the Continental type Chassis in the proportion of 1 to 4. Today it is almost 1 to 2; and the total number of Continental type Chassis ordered since 1930 is no less than 118, involving 118 sets of Springs.

4 - The Repair Department up to today have changed a large number of the lighter type Rear Springs - the actual total so altered amounting to no less than 132 Chassis. Of course the original light type springs have been thrown into our stock.

Meantime everybody at Derby realizes the position, and they are doing everything that can be done to absorb the stocks, but until trade revives in 40/50 HP. Chassis, I am afraid it will be many months before same are absorbed or converted.
