40/50 HP. CHASSIS. FAN DRIVE.

In a recent memo from EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} he points out that in Switzerland on more than one occasion they have removed alternate blades of the fan, leaving three instead of six, the statement being that the cooling is considerably improved by so doing.

It is the first time I have heard of this suggestion put forward, and think it most desirable that you should make some test to try and prove or disprove the statement.

It is of course possible to get too many blades into a fan, the effect being that when an excessive number of blades relative to the speed of the fan is used, a whirling action is set up by the frictional contact of the edges of the blade with the air. This tends to drag the air round in a continuous swirling motion instead of driving the air astern and clearing the blade of the acted-upon air.
