X1336 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}33/KW. 26th June, 1936. The Earl of Rothes, The India Tyre & Rubber Co.Ltd., Mileage Dept. (Area 'B'), 80, Clapham Rd., LONDON, S.W.9. Dear Rothes, We have now done a certain amount of running on the 6 x 17 tyres fitted with the wide rims. We are satisfied with the road holding. On the whole the car is more comfortable with these tyres run at low pressures than on the standard tyre. Unfortunately, the increased weight per wheel with this equipment is 4 lbs. 2 ozs., or nearly 21 lbs. per car. We do not know whether, in view of the larger area of contact, etc., you will find it possible to lighten the rim further, as the wide rim wheel is practically 3 lbs. heavier than the standard wheel. I should be glad, however, if you would obtain all the information available on this subject, with alternative rim thicknesses, and we could then discuss the matter. Also the exact location of the rim relative to the wheel cone, which we have already taken up with you. The only objection we have to the tyre is that it is too noisy, and we should like to suggest one or two modifications to the tread on the same lines as the experiments that you have been carrying out on the Phantom III. We think that we are now in a position to talk over these tyres and wheels, as soon as you can conveniently come to Derby. We suggest Thursday or Friday of next week. We are sending a copy of this letter to Mr. Worth. Yours sincerely, | ||
