ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED, NIGHTINGALE ROAD, DERBY. TELEGRAMS: "ROYCAR," DERBY. TELEPHONES: 813 (Two Lines). DEPARTMENTAL MEMO. This column is for Name of Person addressed. Mr Barrington. DATE. 6.6.12 REFERENCE No. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}16/T6612. Re 1649 Car in France, The attached are extracts on my report to Mr Johnson re above car. This report was sent to Mr Johnson for Mr Royce for at T.C. on the 30/5/12 and will no doubt be returned to you in the course of a day or two. VENTILATION SCHEME :- The question of heat from the floorboards is much more satisfactory and did not seem to give any more trouble from boiling than on standard car. There is however a certain amount of warm air which passes through the floorboards especially through the holes for the pedals, which is contaminated by exhaust gasses and road dust and which does not appear to pass through the dashboard, but from the back of the undershield. Testing on cars with covered bodies this is rather objectionable especially if the side windows are opened. Should these windows be closed there is no passage of the above mentioned gasses through the floorboards. It appears that the best scheme as regards this matter is to arrange that if possible the pressure under the floorboards is less than the pressure above the floorboards so that if anything the air would pass in the opposite direction. I have been into this matter with Mr Spinney who is now arranging to try a different undershield so as to achieve the above if possible. I have made tests with ventilators to allow cold air to pass through the dashboard through the floorboards, this however did not give any manifest advantage, the cooling effect appeared to be local only, the general temperature & This sheet must be filed with the correspondence to which it refers.
