We have further information on the most satisfactory treatment in respect of cleaning the crankcase free of particles, for which cast iron has a bad reputation, and in the opinion of people who have had experience on cast iron engines every precaution should be taken. The information is as follows:- (a) After shot blasting, the crankcase should be immersed in boiling caustic soda and after removal painted while still hot to seal the pores. (b) Following (a), the crankcase is machined and when finished, for assembly blown with the normal air pressure, but using a nozzle that will go to the bottom of every stud hole or passage etc. that is "blind". This sounds very elementary, but we are assured that it is an important item to ensure a clean engine. Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Swdl. {Len H. Swindell} | ||
