Vickers} 12.11.40. 40 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m. Type 'BN {W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} ' Naval Gun No.S.4872. On receipt of information that difficulty had been experienced in re-assembling the above gun, stationed at H.M.S. Osprey, our mechanic, N.H. Morley, was sent along to investigate, and we give below copy of his report in this connection. "The difficulty in re-assembly was due to a foul between the screwed end piece Q.1451 on the breech rod and the firing motor shaft. There is clearance between these two parts in the assembled condition, but when the breech block is disconnected by unscrewing the serrated nut, the breech rod travels forward a short distance and is then forced downwards as the screwed end piece comes in contact with the cross shaft. The resultant misalignment is such that the firing motor shaft must first be removed before the striker housing arm can be re-coupled to the breech rod. More clearance is therefore required at this point, and as a temporary measure the screwed end piece in S.4872 was filed away a sufficient amount to enable assembly to be completed without each time removing the firing motor shaft.
